Bitter Sweet – a reflective moment

Bitter sweet – a reflective moment.

Whilst Caron Cares is primarily designed to offer great advice and really useful information to help you care for someone elderly, I do like to occasionally share my thoughts and observations.

My job as a home-help has its moments of tragic sadness and also immense joy.

This week I collected an electronic magnifier from a very recently widowed gentleman I have known in my town for many years. His way of working through the immense and acute grief he is feeling is to clear out all of the items his wife used to help her sight loss. This included the magnifier.

His voice was faltering as he spoke and my heart felt his loss so acutely.

The following day the magnifier was installed with it’s new owner and the delight and excitement at being able to see print again was once again heart tugging. Now he can read his 90th Birthday cards when they arrive later in the year and his son has said he will write to him. A degree of independence has been restored.

As a home help some days are good, some are great but no two are ever the same. I love my work.
